Solving math problems is core to understanding math concepts. When Math problems are presented as real-life problems students get a chance to apply their Math knowledge and skills. Word problems progressively develop a student’s ability to visualize and logically interpret Mathematical situations.

What do I need to find out? What math operation is needed to solve the problem? For example addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc. What clues and information do I have? What are the key words like sum, difference, product, perimeter, area, etc.? Which is the non-essential information?

Decide a plan

Develop a plan based on the information that you have to solve the problem. Consider various strategies of problem solving: Drawing a model or picture making a list looking for pattern Working backwards Guessing and checking using logical reasoning

Solve the problem

Carry out the plan using the Math operation or formula you choose to find the answer.

Check if the answer looks reasonable Work the problem again with the answer Remember the units of measure with the answer such as feet, inches, meter etc.

Note to the Teachers and Parents

Help students become great problem solvers by modelling a systematic approach to solve problems. Display the ‘Four step plan of problem solving’ for students to refer to while working independently or in groups.

• Enable students to enjoy the process of problem solving rather than being too focused on finding the answers.
• Provide opportunities to the students to think; explain and interpret the problem.
• Lead the student or the group to come up with the right strategy to solve the problem.
• Discuss the importance of showing steps of their work and checking their answers.
• Explore more than one possible solution to the problems.
• Give a chance to the students to present their work.
